The stone marker for our Mother’s grave was finally placed last week. We had ordered it soon after Mom’s passing in February but it took all this time for the special granite stone we had chosen to arrived from India. Kevin, owner of Royal Monument in Springport MI, did an exceptional job with the ordering of our selected granite and the engraving work of the design we worked with him to create. The porcelain heart-shaped picture of our Mom as a young woman will forever remind us of her young-at-heart spirit.

Family Crest
With the recent passing of our mother, Lila Belle Walker Hartmann, family members have become interested in our “family crest”. We have a hand-painted picture of the crest made by Lila in 1973. The family name on the crest is “Bell”.
Lila studied graphic art in her college years, and in her early adult years utilized her skills working in an aircraft factory during the Korean War. In later years people paid Lila to do special graphic design projects for them. The “Bell” family crest picture is a project Lila did for personal reasons unfortunately not known to the remaining family.
Back in the early to mid-1960’s, Lila’s father, Joseph E. Walker, became very active in researching his genealogy through his own mother’s line back to the American Revolution. His purpose was for Lila to be able to join the DAR, Daughter’s of the American Revolution. Direct lineage needed to be established to an ancestor who was an active soldier during the American Revolution.
His mother’s name was “Annie Lila Bell” whom Lila was named after her. Lila may have added an “e” to her middle name “Belle” to distinguish it from her grand-mother’s name. It is through the “Bell” family line that the generations can be traced back to the Revolutionary War. Through great diligence, my grand-father did successfully connect the family line back to the Revolution and my mother joined the DAR in June 1966.
Through my own recent online research I have discovered there are many variations of “Bell” family crests, most incorporating bell images on the shield. No images have shown up that are the exact image of our “Bell” crest.
Now the family has questions that may never be answered…in particular, where did Lila get her inspiration for the crest’s composition, its colors and heraldic details? We understand the origin of the “Bell” name, and we know Lila did the art work, but no documents, references or personal notes have been found to help with our understanding of how this family crest was developed. Sadly with Lila’s passing, we may never know.
“NE CEDE MALIS” is Latin for “Yield not to misfortune”
My niece, Diane, followed in Lila’s (her Granny) footsteps of studying art in college and now works in Chicago in the graphic design field. Diane had not seen the “Bell” family crest until recently and personally connected with it. I will be reframing and giving Diane the “crest” picture…a gift of Lila’s artistic legacy continuing through her grand-daughter.
Lila Belle Walker Hartmann
This post is dedicated to our Mother, Lila Belle Walker Hartmann, who passed on Thursday, February 11, 2021. She was 88 years old. Lila was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on July 10, 1932 to parents, Joseph E. Walker and Sally Farr Walker. A younger brother, Joseph Jr., was her only sibling.
Lila’s growing up years were in Cincinnati, Ohio where she graduated from Walnut Hills Hills High School in 1950. She attended University of Cincinnati to study Marketing and Design, and was a member of the Tri-Delta Sorority. Later she would use her graphic design skills as an illustrator in an aircraft factory during the Korean War.
On August 1, 1953, Lila married James (Jim) Hartmann, also from Cincinnati, Ohio in the home of her mother, Sally Walker, in Cincinnati. Lila and Jim met in school. Lila and Jim would have three children – Cristy, Elizabeth (Liz), and James Jr. After Cristy was born, the family moved to Milford, Michigan. Lila resided in Milford until 1997 (the year she turned 65). From 1997-2010, she was with son James Jr. in Florida and back to Michigan. From 2010 to her passing, Lila lived with daughter, Liz, in Mason, Michigan.
Her Milford years were busy raising her three children, and a working partner with her father in his honey business, Walker & Sons Apiaries. In addition, Lila was devoted to her faith and church, enjoyed knitting, and studied the oriental art of brushwork painting. During the later years of her life, Lila enjoyed attending teas with her daughter Cristy.
Lila was devoted to her children all her life. During our growing up years Lila gave the most precious gift she could – helping each one of us find our special talents and supporting each one’s particular interests. For Cristy, it was enrolling her in 4-H and learning to sew. For Liz, it was her ballet and dance. For James Jr. it was his sports, football and weight-lifting. Lila would see all three children graduate from Michigan State University, with Cristy and Liz going on to achieve their Master’s degrees (MSU).
Lila’s family continues on with her four grand-children – Diane, David, Nathanael, and Gabriel; and three great-grand-children- Madison, Silas, and Riley.
Lila’s legacy will be her love, kindness, generosity, optimism and positive attitude she expressed to all who knew her. She always had an encouraging word and bright smile. She loved life. She loved her family. She loved God.
God Bless You Mom.

Our 43rd Anniversary!
On Sunday, September 11, 1977 at 5:00pm, David and I were married on the campus of Michigan State University in the Rose Garden behind the Student Services Building. Beaumont Tower was chiming the hour. The weather was perfect…clear sunny skies and mid-70’s temperature. Our immediate families were present to support us and celebrate the occasion. A retired reverend officiated the ceremony. Afterwards we all gathered, including the reverend and his wife, at the Grate Steak Restaurant in East Lansing for our wedding supper.
The Grate Steak Restaurant was part of the Win Schuler’s line of restaurants at that time. Sadly the Grate Steak has been gone for years. Out of all the Schuler restaurants that were once around in Michigan, the only one left is Schuler’s in Marshall MI.
Over the years many of our birthdays, holidays and anniversaries have been celebrated at Schuler’s in Marshall. And this year’s anniversary was enjoyed there as well. David and I have one favorite entree that we order…London Broil. Unfortunately over the last couple years we weren’t seeing it on their menu…and stopped going.
At some point I had a conversation with a manager about this. He explained that yes the London Broil entree is hit and miss on their menu now, sometimes only showing up during the Christmas holiday season. He also said when we make our reservations to specifically ask for the London Broil and the chef will prepare it for us if he has the ingredients on hand.
So last Friday, September 11, 2020, on our 43rd wedding anniversary, and with a 5:00pm reservation …Schuler’s came through for us with a delicious meal that included all our favorites…Schuler’s Cheese and Crackers, Schuler’s Salad, London Broil, and Creme Brulee (with a Raspberry Swirl) for dessert! Thank You Schuler’s!
Mom’s Birthday Tea Party
On July 10 (2020) our Mom had her 88th birthday! Happy Blessed Birthday!
David and I celebrated with Mom on Sunday, July 12 when we were looking after her while my sister and her husband were away for the day. I decided to do something fun by having a Birthday Tea Party supper for the three of us.
Since we were going to be with Mom at my sister’s home, I brought over the white lace table linens, china and glass tableware, gold flatware, teaware and tea food needed for our special meal. It was a pleasant day so I set things up on their back screened-in porch.
I made my version of Gazpacho Soup which I served in glass cups and placed on our Haviland china plates. I used my grand-mother’s Haviland china for the same reason as at our May Porch Party…to include her in spirit in our festivities.
We had five savories, a fruit, and four tea desserts that were plated and presented on a three-tier server. Earl Grey Black Tea was poured from a tea-cozy covered tea pot into the Haviland china teacups. I prepared the savories and fruit. All the tea desserts were purchased pre-made from Kroger.
Happy Birthday!

May Porch Party
In honor of Mother’s Day and to celebrate my birthday (they were two days apart), my sister Liz and our mom Lila, came over to the house for a “porch party”. I set up a couple table trays to hold tea-ware and the dessert which my sister was bringing. Liz baked delicious Blueberry Crumble Bars and also brought vanilla ice cream for a-la-mode. She decorated the dessert pan with a sweet birthday banner. I have my grandmother’s Haviland china and I thought it would be a lovely gesture to use it…a way to include her in our family celebration too.

Michigan Peaches
David and I, Soapy too, had a little road trip last Friday to Phillips Orchard and Cider Mill located north of St. John’s, MI (about 1/2-mile further north of Uncle John’s Cider Mill) on the southbound side I-127. Our mission was for some sweet Michigan peaches which I learned at their Facebook page are in season now.
We like going to their apple orchard in the fall to pick apples and enjoy a cool apple cider slushy on a warm autumn day…yum! And we enjoy their donuts…we think they are better than Uncle John’s! So in addition to the peaches we bought, we also brought home 1/2 dozen donuts to enjoy an early taste of fall!
We are enjoying the peaches sliced in a bowl every day…twice a day actually…they are soooo good and juicy…nothing better than a fresh Michigan peach!
